Ceramide is the central hub of the sphingolipid pathway, which includes sphingomyelin, glucosylceramide, and galactosylceramide. It is further divided into hexose ceramide (HexCer), lactose ceramide (LacCer), sphingosine (Sph), dihydro sphingosine (DhSph), and dihydroceramide (DhCer). Ceramide has a solid ability to associate with water molecules, thus maintaining skin moisture by forming a network structure in the stratum corneum. The Lipidomic platform employs the liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) method, which implies the QTRAP 4500 LC-MS/MS system for the efficient and accurate detection of ceramide content changes. Currently, some detectable ceramides (Cer) include HexCer, LacCer, Sph, DhSph, DhCer, Cer(d14:1/16:0), Cer(d14:1/22:0), Cer(d15:1/20:0), etc.
