We’ve been getting a lot of questions about the ferry because it’s not a widely known option of transport to this area. When we were doing our own research we didn’t find a ton of information on things like how to prepare your vehicle, what to pack, the many ways you can sleep on board, food, boat amenities, and things of that nature. Since taking the ferry we’ve been able to clear a lot of those things up and now we’ll be able to come better prepared in the future and I want to pass that wisdom on to you all!

GRAPHIC! 12 Days Moose Hunting in Alaska – 2 Bulls Down

Alaska Moose Hunt 2023, big game hunters Dave and Eric from Maine were back at it again in South West Alaska in pursuit of the Alaska Yukon bull moose. LISTEN AS SPRUCE BRANCHES SNAP LIKE TWIGS AS DAVE’S BULL RAKES HIS WAY TO THE CALL…VOLUME UP. Accessing a remote lake by bush plane, this do it yourself (DIY) moose hunt places you in the Alaska bush, home to brown bears, wolves and wolverines to name a few. This was Eric’s 5th season and Dave’s 6th season hunting moose in Alaska. Dave first hunted this area back in 2018 and encountered an unusually warm season resulting in the bulls not moving much and he did not harvest a bull that season. This was Eric’s 5th season and prior to this hunt, has only harvested one bull on a small lake to the northeast. Dave’s last bull was harvested two season’s ago further to the north on a slough off the Yukon River. Dave and Eric hunt the early season which is the early phase of the moose rut when the bulls are moving, scent checking cows, and setting dominance for the right to breed. Once bulls are in lock down with their cows and not moving, it can be hard to get them to come to the call. Cold weather really helps with movement and focusing on the early morning and evenings is the most productive. Bulls can often be coaxed into responding to the call when they think a dominant bull is encroaching on his cow!

Non residents are not required to hire a guide when hunting moose in Alaska but it does require a lot of research, good outdoor camping and survival skills. Over the past 6 seasons, they have encountered torrential downpours, high winds for days at a time and numerous close encounters with brown bears. Knowing how to set up and manage your campsite is critical in the Alaska bush and some of your best tools is patience and knowing how to keep your wits about you when faced with predator’s and harsh elements.

Eric’s choice of weapon on this hunt was a Browning 28 Nosler purchased at Howell’s Gun Shop in Gray Maine ( https://howellsgunshop.com/ ) with a silencer which helps with the recoil, but also lessons the tendency to jerk at such a loud percussion when it was fired. Dave’s moose hunting rifle was a Tikka Lite 300 Win Mag (https://choose.tikka.fi/usa/code/JRTXE331R10) topped with a Leupold VX-31 3.5 X 10 50mm ( https://www.leupold.com/vx-3hd-3-5-10×50-cds-zl-duplex ). The best tent they have used is the Cabela’s Alaskan Guide Model Geodesic 8-Person Tent (https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/cabelas-alaskan-guide-model-geodesic-8-person-tent ) which is a very dry tent that handles high winds when staked down properly. This tent, while on the heavy side, works well for 2 hunters with cots. A common bush plane in Alaska that many air taxi’s use is the de Havilland Beaver on floats with a payload of 1200 LBs. Other planes such as the piper cub with tundra tires will get you into smaller places such as ridge tops and gravel bars but really limits you on how much weight you can bring in. Many moose hunters go at backpack style when flying in a cub. Speaking of going at it back pack style, there are many options for meals but we have found the Mountain House ( https://mountainhouse.com/ ) makes some of the best and most affordable. Be sure to mix it up with so ‘real’ food and don’t forget the potato, onion and seasoning to go with some tenderloin or back strap after harvesting your moose!
